The History of Sutton Coldfield In Needlework

These emboideries are a record from the earliest times to 1974, when the Royal Town was incorporated with the City of Birmingham.

The idea came from Mrs Julia Mills, the last Mayoress of Sutton Coldfield, who, through the Sutton Coldfield News, invited anyone interested in the project to meet in the Mayoress's Parlour on 26th November 1973. Forty people attended, and a committee was formed. Miss Hilda Moss was elected Historian and Mrs Olive Hill, a needlewoman of international repute, would coordinate the work.

Six groups were formed, and after three years of research and preparation, with much assistance from Miss May Henry, Town School, and Mr Harold Sykes, Borough Librarian, the sewing began. Over the years more people joined while others left. Sadly some did not live to see the panels framed.

Wherever possible the work has been emboidered in stitches and materials relevant to the period depicted. This frame is made from oak from Sutton Park.

We would like to thank all those who have supported us so generously in a variety of ways during the twenty years it has taken us to complete this work.
