Greenhouse Layout The wall of the Walled Garden is of a style that dates it to the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. It would be nice to think that the children of Francis Willughby the naturalist used the garden for their specimen plants. The first Lord Middleton, Francis' son Thomas had a physik garden when he was at Cambridge, but his and his sister's efforts were concentrated at Wollaton and the structure of our garden indicates that it was intended to provide produce for a house with a small complement of staff that was not visited much by its owners. Under the last owners it still had greenhouses where they had been for many years when the hall was tenanted. By 1985 the formal layout shown in the picture on the right had been created and the garden is now a haven of peace and a showplace of colour.

The Walled Garden

The garden is planned and maintained by a volunteer group of ladies supported by the Trust's gardener. It is said that in early times the Gazebo was used as a sewing room where the ladies of the Hall amused themselves while the men went off hunting.
