The wall of the Walled Garden is of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century probably due to the first Lord Middleton. His sister, Cassandra had a noted garden at Canons, plant collecting from the New World being very much in fashion.
In 1980 the garden had decayed for 14 years
and contained the greenhouses which the Averills had used for commercial
produce. By 1985 the formal layout on the right had been created and the garden is now a haven of
peace and a showplace of colour.
The garden is planned and maintained by a volunteer group of ladies supported by the Trust's gardener. It is said that in early times the Gazebo was used as a sewing room where the ladies of the Hall amused themselves while the men went off hunting.
