About the event

How much would you be prepared to pay to secure your future, improve your social status and acquire a husband? Mary Hacket of Moxhull Hall (two miles down the road from Middleton) – was prepared to offer £12,000, the equivalent today of about three quarters of a million. Or at least her father was!

His offer was successful and, on September 11, 1725, Mary married Justinian Isham, heir to the Lamport baronetcy. When they married, they had only met 3 or 4 times in their lives. Her story is a perfectly documented example of an eighteenth century arranged marriage.

Arrive 5:30pm.

Talk begins at 6pm.

Tea/coffee and a slice of cake per person incldued with ticket price.

The talk will last approx. 1hr.
